Myth:
Fighting dogs are a danger to humans.
Fact:
Dogs bred for fighting are bred for aggression towards other animals;
aggression towards humans is a different trait altogether. Pit Bulls were
created and bred for fighting and hunting purposes. Humans worked alongside
their dogs. In the pit, for instance, handlers actually stayed right with their
dogs, even picking them up midfight. A dog that was a danger to humans would
not be feasible in such situations. Instead, animals that were easy to handle
and friendly towards humans were the ones that were selected for. Today, dogs
confiscated in raids on fighting rings are oftentimes euthanized without
question. The reason for this is that fighting dogs are mistakenly believed to
be a danger to humans. It is truly unfortunate that these dogs are not given a
chance, as many of them would make wonderful pets in the right home. It is
because of prejudice and misunderstanding that ex-fighting dogs are feared and
therefore denied the chance of a obtaining a happy life.
